Interested in Starting a Texas Hold’em Poker League? Here’s How!

If you’re thinking of starting a Texas Hold’em poker league in your area and aren’t sure what to do, then read on.  This article is for YOU!

You, of course, have to decide if you want your Texas Hold’em poker league to be all men, all women or a mixed poker league.  Then you have to poll your friends and acquaintances to see how many would commit to a ten month poker league.  You will want to start out with at least 16 – 20 people.

Then you need to decidewhy you want to start your Texas Hold’em league, what would you like the group to be called, how often would you like to meet, is your poker league educational, how do you want to pay – one lump sum or for each session.  And you have to set up the prize that you’re playing for (usually to send the top 2 – 3 players for the season to a compete in a major tournament).  You will need to establish your poker league rules.

Also, you will need to find one or more of your new recruits to host the league.  Preferably someone who has poker tables, poker chips, poker software or timer, and everything else you’ll need to shuffle up and deal.

Don’t forget about setting up your blind structures.  And establishing points for the  league players in the order that they finish.  The top two or three players will be given their buy in for the major tournaments that you identify in your poker league rules.  You’ll also want to establish how many chips that all poker league players will start with.

I belong to two poker leagues and we use the WSOP sanctioned poker rules for each league.  The difference is one of the leagues meets once per month and we pay at the beginning of the league and play 12 games.   The other league is set up so that we pay $20 twice per month as we play.

Both have their merits.  If you pay in advance, you don’t have to worry about funding your prize pool if someone misses one game.  The downside is that there is no prize money per game – it all goes to the final prizes.

The pay as you go method offers the top three winners a small prize pool (half goes to the final prizes).  Each poker league is set up to help the members to become better skilled Texas Hold’em poker players, with all aspects of the game including betting and heads up play which can be more challenging parts of the game.  There’s a lot of strategy involved in playing poker and this will certainly help to develop an individual’s poker strategy.

The prize money that is set aside is used to send at least two people to a major tournament.  One league that I play in pays for the buy-in for the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Ladies Tournament which is played in June at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A poker league can be very effective for improving your poker play and give you more confidence when you play in major tournaments or casino or card room sponsored cash games.

A Texas Hold’em league is educational, fun, and a great social outlet as well – it’s enjoyable to play poker with friends and acquaintances.  You can add to the social aspect by  bringing food and sharing personal stories during play.  And, of course, you can keep each other up on what tournaments are coming up that are close to home just in case one or more of the poker layers can participate.  Starting a poker league in yourarea has many benefits and can be very educational, fun and rewarding!

How To Build Your Perfect Man Cave: Get The Clay Poker Chips

Few things are more important when it comes to the continued sanity of the middle-aged American male than a superior, relaxing, bro-filled “Man Cave.” After all, even Superman had his fortress of Solitude.

There are some obvious essentials, of course. The first one is the television, and the second is the couch. And the inquiry “Which should be bigger?” is a very serious one. When someone asks you how big your plasma, HD, Blu-Ray, 3-D, whatever Television, you should be able to answer simply, yet confidently “BIG!”… and then throw your head back and laugh like a James Bond villain.

As for the couch, well, size matters there as well. What you need to keep in mind is that one of the best features of the Man Cave is that it can easily transform from a Fortress of Solitude to a melting pot of Man Love. Especially with the massive TV you’re going to put down there, it’s important all your beer-drinking, Sports-watching buddies have a place to sit, right?

Folding chairs work can work, but that should only be in an emergency. And these emergencies only occur when your sofa doesn’t have enough space! So make sure that couch is as big… and of course, as comfortable… as possible.

Big love seats are nice, but when you got a bunch of dudes hanging out, you’re typically not going to have two individuals on one seat. So save the space, and get a couch instead.

But the most important thing to remember: This is YOUR man-cave, which means it should be personal to YOU! If you and your buddies love blackjack, throw in a couple blackjack tables. If you and your buddies like pinball, opt in for a couple pinball machines. If you have a unique but perfectly normal obsession with Denise Richards, than hey, by all means, get a couple cardboard cutouts of her and set them up throughout the cave. We recommend the one from when she was in “Wild Things.”

But seriously, the most important thing when putting these finishing touches onto your very own personal Fortress of Solitude is to make every precise detail designed for you. And that means EVERY detail.

A friend of mine had a set of plastic poker chips, but he knew deep-down he wanted a set of clay ones like they have at all the casino poker tables. So he went out and got himself his very own personal set of clay poker chips. Sounds like a tiny difference… but the tiniest difference can surprisingly go a long way. Don’t cheap out on your man cave. Get the clay poker chips.

500 11.5 Gram Nexgen Jackpot Casino Clay Poker Chip Sets w/ Mahogany Case

These poker chip sets were introduced in 2005. These “Jackpot Casino” clay composite poker chip sets are a full 11.5 grams in weight, giving them the authentic weight and feel of actual casino poker chips.

What makes these chips truly stand out are their quality graphics.  On both sides, all chips have a full-color photo montage of “Fabulous Las Vegas” and its skyline, including the infamous diamond-shaped “welcome to Las Vegas” sign. “Jackpot Casino” adorns the top of the chip in bold letters. One unique feature is that the denominations are also part of these chips’ design. Selections of 1, 5, 25, 50, 100 and 500 are among these denominations. And this is no label! The graphics are embedded and part of the chip so they wont peel off.  The quality of these graphics is great!

I would highly recommend these poker chips as a gift or a personel purchase.  They fit the needs of any poker player and will bring the casino feel to your home game. I have owend a set for years, but did not break them out until recently.  Since then I have not used any other poker chip.

They can retail anywhere from $125.00-$200 depending on where you purchase them.  You should never pay more than $200 for the 500 peice poker chip sets.  Nexgen also makes smaller and larger set version of these poker chips.

I also like the premium wood case that the set comes in.  It should include two decks of cards and five dice with the purchase. If your looking for the highest quality of poker chip sets then these are for you. There are many online retailers you can choose from.  I purchased mine from www.premiumcasinosupply.com and recieved them in three business days.

Poker: Odds Of Winning Against 1, 2, 3, Or 4 Random Hands

You know that AA, pocket rockets, American Airlines is the best hold’em hand preflop.

But you just started a charity tournament, and some guy at your table who’s been hitting the bar for quite a while has been pushing all-in almost every hand. Now you hold AA. What are your chances? What about if you hold 99? 22? KQ?

I built this chart some time ago, to look at how well any hand holds up against random hands. Obviously it’s not something worth memorizing, but there are things worthwhile noting.

Even AA is only an 85% favorite against a random hand. That means that 15% of the time, AA will lose. And by the time there are 4 random hands, AA is only a 56% favorite. That’s the reason we raise preflop with AA to limit the competition. That’s why it can be dangerous to try to trap with AA as well.

At the other end of the spectrum, even the lowly 72 offsuit will win 35% of the time against a random hand. Keep that in mind at the end of the tournament and you’re running out of chips. 32 fares even worse than 72.

In between, we can see that even 22 is 50% against a single random hand. 99 is much better at 72%. Big Ace hands like AK AQ AJ do pretty well, as well as the rest of the generally accepted “big hands”.

Being suited only increases the winning percentage of the hands by 2 or 3%.

All hands have their chances decrease substantionally the more hands it competes against.

Remember, these are against random hands though, when your opponent really is playing any two cards. Like your tablemate who’s been at the bar too long before the game.
